Moriarty's Sledgehammer costume is white and maroon. It's never really visible, but on his left hand (the maroon side of the costume), he's got a white glove; on the white side, it's a maroon glove.

The sketchy lines around him in panel 2 are what I call 'william lines'. It's quick burst lines that when connected, can look a bit like the way I draw out the name william -- all quick, angled lines.

And yes, short names are easier to work into word balloons. If I had known than when I created the strip, Moriarty's name would've been Tim or Greg or Paul.
